Snye dredging process begins

Posted on August 13, 2024

Snye dredging will take place beginning on Monday August 12 in Fort McMurray.

According to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Construction fencing will be installed, with Snye Point closed until mid-September.

The mouth of the Snye fills with sediment deposits (silt) brought by the current of the Clearwater River. Each year, this silt is dredged (removed) from the river to maintain access between the channel and the Clearwater River.

Boat launches will remain open next week, but with the water levels at low depths, there is limited access to the Clearwater River from the boat launches. Boaters are being encouraged to use a different boat launch until the dredging is complete.

Actual dredging will take place beginning on August 19. The expected completion date is set for September 15.

Until the project is complete, parking in the lot next to Snye Point will be limited or not possible.
