By intercepting trash upstream, the project helps keep marine life safe in the State Marine Conservation Area, prevents debris from accumulating in tidal marsh habitat, and reduces the amount of refuse transported into Newport Harbor, the open ocean, local beaches, and the Area of Special Biological Significance along Newport’s coast.
Congratulations to the City of Newport Beach, County of Orange, Burns & McDonnell, Jilk Heavy Construction, Inc., and TIDAL INFLUENCE for the project’s Engineering News-Record West Best Projects Award of Merit in the Water/Environment category, recognizing the innovation and collaboration behind this community investment.
Anchor QEA led the structural engineering design for the project, including the steel-framed pier that supports the rail-mounted trash container sled, anchor piles for the floating trash collector and containment booms, and reinforced concrete foundations for the trash container sled winch and area lights. The anchor piles and gangway guide frame are designed for high water conditions caused by storm events.
