The US Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) New England District recently disclosed details on a plan to dredge Massachusetts’ Wareham Harbor as part of a federal navigation improvement project.
The works will entail the removal of approximately 58,000 cubic yards (44,000 cubic metres) of silt and sand from the federal channel over a period of three to four months. The dredging will be conducted 24/7 and will begin in the middle of September of the year that the funding for the project will become available.
The federal navigation project covers a channel 2.4 miles (3.9 kilometres) long and has an authorised depth of nine feet (2.7 metres) Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW). However, recently conducted surveys have shown that some portions of the channel are only 3.4 feet (one metre) deep.
Upon completion, the channel will be restored to its authorised dimensions, thus allowing safe navigation for all vessels in the harbour.
