The dredging of Sigatoka River will start this year.

Agriculture Minister Inia Seruiratu says tenders were advertised in December last year but everything was put on hold due to TC Winston.

‘’It will be done in three stages and we expect to extract about 1.2million of cubic meters of siltage. That will be done in three stages. The first stage will be undertaken in 2016-2017 period involving the first 3.5 km from the bridge to the river mouth. So that is due to start this year’’.

Seruiratu was asked about the government’s plans for dredging the Sigatoka river and Tuva river which is in the same district.

He told parliament that high levels of silt have been detected in the Nadroga, Sigatoka and Tuva areas.

He adds they have included dredging in Labasa, Navua and Rewa River as well.

Dredging at the Ba River mouth is on hold because of the magnetite extraction.
