Siemens Gamesa is still testing giant offshore wind turbine

When the prototype was set up at the beginning of the year, it was the most powerful wind turbine in the world, but it has since been surpassed by a Chinese prototype of 26MW. | Photo: Jan Woitas

The large offshore wind turbine is currently being tested in Østerlid, Denmark, where Siemens Gamesa has a test center. (Updated and corrected)

(Correction: It was previously stated in the article that Siemens Gamesa had decided to market the large offshore wind turbine. However, that decision has not yet been made.)

”The situation remains unchanged, and our company’s stance is the same as before: The turbine is still a test turbine. We are testing the technology and will decide at a later stage whether it will become a commercially viable project.”

This is stated in an email from Siemens Gamesa to EnergiWatch.

Thus, the turbine manufacturer denies that a decision has been made to market the offshore turbine with a capacity of 21.5 MW, as previously indicated in this article.

In the article, Stephan Buller, head of the company’s offshore wind products, was quoted as saying that the goal was definitely ”to commercialize the turbine at some point.”

However, Siemens Gamesa now clarifies that as of today, there is no ”confirmation of commercialization, and there are no plans to launch the turbine on the market” at this time.

The prototype of the turbine, known as SG DD-276, was installed at the beginning of the year and was the most powerful wind turbine in the world, but it has since been surpassed by a Chinese prototype with a capacity of 26 megawatts.
