Shipping Channel Reopens After Dredging Pipe Found

Posted on October 24, 2016

A ship lost a dredging pipe in the shipping channel between the Dames Point Bridge and the Mayport ferry area, closing down the channel from about 3 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

A Coast Guard spokesperson says the organization was forced to close down the channel to shipping traffic on the St. Johns River as they searched for the 75-foot pipe to no avail. If the pipe was sticking out of the ground at an angle, it could have posed a danger to passing ships.

The Coast Guard had to use the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department’s sonar equipment to find the pipe. Once it was found, authorities said they found it wasn’t a danger to ships.

Authorities say the company that dropped the pipe will be responsible for getting it.
