The US senator highlighted the amplified significance the ship channel will have, not just locally, but state and worldwide once finished.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — U.S. Senator John Cornyn stopped by the Port of Corpus Christi on Wednesday to meet with local leaders and discuss the Corpus Christi Ship Channel improvement project.

It is expected to be the deepest channel in the Gulf, ensuring safe passage for tankers and increasing capacity for crude-oil exports.

Cornyn highlighted the amplified significance the ship channel will have, not just locally, but state and worldwide once finished.

“This not only affects what happens here in Corpus Christi, which is very exciting and how this dovetails what’s happening across the state of Texas, as the world’s premiere energy producer,” he said. “None of this would be happening without the Port of Corpus Christi.”

During his time in town, Cornyn also addressed desal, saying he wants to help expedite the process.

“The port and the desal project is something I’m very supportive of,” he said. “What I would like to do is figure out how I can help and make it happen faster. I know it’s a collaboration at the local level. I wanna figure out what I can do at the federal level.”

Some of the port’s main customers, such as Valero, Cheniere Energy and Enbridge Incorporated, also were in attendance to talk with Cornyn.
