The Port of Seattle recently signed an agreement with BNSF Railway Co. to acquire a 42-mile rail corridor in King and Snohomish counties for $107 million.
King County — which plans to develop a trail on 32 miles of the corridor — is contributing $2 million toward the purchase price. The northern portion of the corridor will continue to be used for freight-rail service.
Port and King County officials are seeking Surface Transportation Board approval to “rail bank” portions of the corridor. The officials expect the board to grant approval in fall.
