Seatrium and Penta-Ocean partner for heavy lift vessel in Japan’s offshore wind market

Posted on November 13, 2024

Seatrium Limited, through its subsidiary, has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Japan’s Penta-Ocean Construction (POC) to begin early engineering work on a 5,000 ton heavy lift vessel (HLV) designed for Japan’s offshore wind market.

This potential collaboration marks Seatrium’s entry into the Japanese wind sector, with the final engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract expected by Q1 2025, pending POC’s final investment decision.

POC, a Japanese marine contractor with a fleet of turbine installation vessels, seeks to advance its offshore wind capabilities, aiming to support Japan’s transition to renewable energy. Seatrium’s Executive Vice President William Gu highlighted the project’s significance in developing innovative, high-capacity solutions for the growing offshore wind market.

POC’s Senior Executive Tetsunori Ohshimo emphasised the vessel’s crucial role in installing larger monopile foundations for heavier wind turbines, underscoring its anticipated impact on Japan’s offshore wind development.
