SC Ports unveils major road and bridge renovation. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
SC Ports formally opened the Cosgrove Avenue extension and pedestrian bridge in North Charleston Friday in order to enhance the access to the Navy Base Intermodal Facility while ensuring the safety of drivers and rail traffic and local residents.
The new road comes above the operating railway yard and the trains can therefore move autographically to and fro to the terminal station non-interfering vehicular and pedestrian movements. The officials stressed the importance of the project for logistics, community integration and future urban development.
Navy Base Intermodal Facility bolsters local logistics
Navy Base Intermodal Facility will move cargo inland to markets faster utilizing the Port of Charleston. Palmetto Railways, the division of the South Carolina Department of Commerce, will develop and operate the 118-acre facility.
The facility will also be home to daily CSX and Norfolk Southern intermodal and merchandise train services. Such upgrades will help end cargo bottlenecks while reducing congestion and help offer a more competitive and reliable freight network to regional businesses.
Redevelopment presents community and economic benefits
The development is the first phase in a greater urban revitalization of the historic Charleston Naval Complex, which will comprise mixed-use neighborhoods, industrial districts, and a waterfront hub for maritime, logistics, and manufacturing initiatives.
Meanwhile, the administration at the harbor reaffirmed the emphasis on community impacts mitigation. Noise control measures, protection systems, and traffic planning feature in development plans to provide for simplified freight activities and community coexistence.
