US autonomous vessel manufacturer Saronic Technologies is deepening its existing partnership with chip maker Nvidia to focus on advancing technologies for maritime autonomy and robotics.
The partnership will see the two companies work together on research and development in robotics and autonomous technology to find ways to improve decision-making capabilities for ships operating at sea.
The companies plan to use Nvidia’s computing power and software tools to support the building, testing, and deployment of Saronic’s autonomous maritime platforms.
The focus is on using the resources to carry out these activities more quickly and efficiently.
Saronic co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas said: “By combining Saronic’s deep expertise in maritime autonomy and next-generation shipbuilding with Nvidia’s world-class AI and computing capabilities, we’re simultaneously developing the most capable and resilient maritime systems in the world and building the industrial engine to produce them at scale and pace.
“This collaboration reinforces our leadership in maritime innovation and enables us to move even faster to scale the delivery of next-generation autonomous vessels and ships to meet the strategic demands of the maritime domain.”
Nvidia offers high-speed computing, software libraries, and Physical AI development and Saronic brings knowledge in autonomous maritime systems, AI, and modern shipbuilding.
Saronic is already using Nvidia’s compute infrastructure, software libraries, and AI tools throughout its simulation, software development, and operational activities.
As a result, Saronic reports it has “significantly accelerated its algorithmic flywheel and autonomy development cycle”.
It has also seen a reduction in the time required to train, verify, and deploy new software features, with processes that previously took days now completed in hours.
These improvements are intended to enable rapid iteration of Saronic’s autonomy systems and further the development of multi-agent autonomous functions on its platforms, said the company.
According to Saronic, this initiative will contribute to the “Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance” Executive Order and the bipartisan SHIPS ACT, both of which prioritise the revitalisation of US shipbuilding and maritime industrial capacity through public-private partnerships.
