Voters overwhelmingly approved a proposal to spend $1.25 million, taking a major step toward salvaging sand that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers intends to dredge over the winter from the Cape Cod Canal.
Voters overwhelmingly approved a proposal to spend $1.25 million, taking a major step toward salvaging sand that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers intends to dredge over the winter from the Cape Cod Canal.
Monday night’s hastily called meeting was held as a last-ditch effort to save the sand after a majority of coastal property owners rejected a separate proposal to have the sand dumped in front of private homes. The crowd of 813 voters was so large, town leaders had to open the gymnasium for the overflow crowd inside the Sandwich High School auditorium delaying the start of the proceedings by about 30 minutes.
