Sand replenishment with 1.4 mm m3 in Portugal set to begin

The replenishment of approximately 1,4 million cubic meters of sand along 6,6 kilometers of coastline between Forte Novo and Garrão, in the municipality of Loulé, has already begun, announced the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).

Artificial beach nourishment between Quarteira and Garrão It is “a structuring project for the protection of one of the most vulnerable stretches of the Algarve coast” and represents an investment of over 14 million euros.

The operation should be completed “before the start of the bathing season,” according to the APA, following the mayor of Loulé’s statement. having expressed his concern about the scheduling of the work, which was delayed for several weeks due to bad weather.

Over the next few weeks, 1,4 million cubic meters of sand will be removed from a borrow pit five kilometers off the coast in offshore accounts.

The objective is to “mitigate coastal erosion, reinforce the safety of people and property, and increase the resilience of the coastline to the effects of climate change.”
