The government will ask the company responsible for replenishing the sand on Forte Novo beach in Quarteira to “accelerate the work as much as possible,” as it is not expected to be completed until May. confirming the fears of the mayor of Loulé.

The announcement was made today, Tuesday, March 3rd, by the Minister of Environment and Energy, precisely one day after Telmo Pinto expressed concern that the project would only be completed after the bathing season had already begun in his municipality.

In statements to journalists, on the sidelines of a visit to Praia de FaroMaria da Graça Carvalho acknowledged that the work was “delayed” due to bad weather.

“I was there signing [the construction contract, in January“And we were about to start [the work] when the bad weather came, so they had to stop,” he said.

Now that the storms have passed, the Government will “ask the company carrying out the works to accelerate them as much as possible”.

The goal is for it to be “ready in May, before the bathing season,” the minister pointed out, after the date indicated by Telmo Pinto.

“Our bathing season begins around Easter,” the mayor warned on Monday.

The project foresees the replenishment of 1,3 million cubic meters of sand on the beaches of the Forte Novo/Garrão stretch.

All this sand will be extracted from a borrow pit five kilometers off the Algarve coast, in offshore accounts.

The sand replenishment will cost 9 million euros, but the remaining works, such as walkways and landscaping, will raise the final cost of the project to 14,3 million euros.
