Sand Filling on, Boundary Wall Construction to Start Soon (Bangladesh)

Posted on January 22, 2019

Sand filling of long-awaited Bay Container Terminal in Chattogram has started while construction of boundary wall will begin soon.

Chattogram Port Authority has already started dredging of 68 acres of land acquired from private owners by Chattogram District administration on November 29 last year spending Tk 468 crore.

The fencing of the area would start next week, said the project’s focal point executive engineer of CPA Md Rafiul Alam.

He told New Age that CPA sent proposal to land ministry for the acquisition of another 820 acres of khas land.

Soon after these primary works, CPA would construct delivery yard and truck terminal so that port users could complete their port-related work without entering the main city.

The detailed project plan of the project has been prepared and when it will get approval of the ministry, the construction work of first phase will begin, the CPA engineer has said.

Last year, on November 29, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong handed over the compensation cheque to CPA for the acquired land.

The Bay terminal has been proposed on a 1,200-acre island in the Bay of Bengal of the coast of Patenga in the city’s Halishahar Ananda Bazar area. It is near the Chittagong Port and Chittagong Export Processing Zone. The estimated cost of the project is Tk 17,500 crore.

There would be three terminals — a 1,500-metre multipurpose terminal, a 1,225-metre container terminal and 830-metre container terminal-2. The BCT will have two Dolphin jetties – one for handling coal to be imported for coal-fired plants in Bangladesh and the other for handling cement clinkers.

According to CPA officials, vessels of more than 190 metres (623 feet) in length and up to 13 metres in depth will be able to berth at the new terminal.

Strategic Master Plan for Chittagong Port, prepared by Hamburg Port Consulting, said the terminal would be able to accommodate vessels of up to 5,000 TEU. Currently, Chittagong Port can handle vessels of up to 1,200 TEU and with a depth of less than 9.5 metres.
