The Barbados Port Inc. has not thrown in the towel concerning the alarming growth of sand in the mouth of the Careenage.
In fact, said Harbour Master Richard Alleyne, they had accelerated their efforts by initiating Phase 2 of their combat plan.
“Yes you would see the sand building up but the work hasn’t stopped. What happened was, while we were doing the [dredging], we realised the sand was building at a faster rate than we expected so we decided to move to Phase 2,” he said.
The port has been engaged in dealing with the puzzling problem of the sand build-up, which has been occurring for more than a year, and had been dredging up tonnes of sand. But recently, it appears as if all the machinery had been removed while the sand continued to build. But, looks can be deceiving.”
