CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. (WITN) – Work continues on a project to protect a national park’s shoreline from erosion.
In November 2023, a $6,898,500 contract was awarded to Next Generation Logistics for dredging work to preserve the coastline, including Cape Lookout National Seashore.
The contract included work far beyond the area of the lighthouse, extending from the Back Sound to Lookout Bight Federal Navigation Channel and adjacent National Park Service Channels.
Sand was pumped onto the Cape Lookout National Seashore in late March through early April and has now been spread out.

Joni Dennis with Save Cape Lookout Foundation says around 100 yards of sand is now in front of the dunes at high tide.
She added that crews will be moving their gear to finish the drain/S Curve and drain in the next week and will be out there through the rest of this month.
The picture below, taken in January of this year, shows just how far the shoreline had eroded. Attenuators were added to protect the lighthouse.
