Sand dredge sparks concern for potential water safety hazards

Posted on June 5, 2024

BRYAN COUNTY, Okla. (KTEN) — A sand dredge operated by Eagle Lake Materials Company LLC on the Fannin and Bryan County line is sparking some concerns about potential water hazards on the Oklahoma side of the Red River.

According to the Fannin County Office of Emergency Management, the dredge had partially submerged cables in the water.

We reached out to the Oklahoma Department of Mines about the sand dredge operations.

Chief of Minerals Operations Travis Shore issued a statement, which reads, in part:

“ODM has advised them to take steps to make the dredge more visible to watercraft on the river. These efforts will include installing signage along the banks to indicate a dredging operation, flashing lights on the swing cables, and highly visible floats on the production line. The mine operator will also utilize safe parking procedures… to ensure the cables are not left in an unsafe position.”
