Over the past three years, IHC Miningโs Pulsed Power team has been a proud partner in the international DEEPLIGHT Project, playing a key role in developing a new contactless drilling technology based on Electro Pulsed Power (EPP). This technology uses high-voltage electrical discharges to break rock ๐ค๐๐กโ๐๐ข๐ก mechanical contactโreducing wear, improving efficiency, and enabling new possibilities in hard-rock dredging, underwater mining, and deep geothermal drilling.
And now, our newly developed EPP drilling device is undergoing extensive testing at the TNO – Rijswijk Centre for Sustainable Geo-energyโone of the few facilities capable of safely and realistically simulating deep drilling environments. Suspended in a drilling tower and connected to a full mud circulation system, the device is being pushed to perform under real-world conditions.
These weeks our Pulsed Power team โ Tom Willenbroek, Mohammed Azimi, Robert Plat and Bert van Heesch โ is focusing on:
- Achievable drilling speeds
- Energy requirements
- Optimal operational settings
They are also assessing the deviceโs robustness and reliability, while gaining valuable insights into practical challenges in the drilling industry.
The results from these tests will guide the next round of improvementsโbringing us another step closer to a prototype capable of deep drilling.
Exciting progress toward the future of geothermal energy as a clean and sustainable source of power.
