Royal HaskoningDHV has been hired by a consortium working on the $1.6 billion Marginal da Corimba project, in Luanda, Angola. The firm is tasked with developing a detailed design for the project, which includes reclaiming 400 hectares of land.

The city remains poor, with large swathes of its residents living below the poverty line, and continues to suffer from issues related to congestion, as well as limited economic opportunities.

In a bid to improve economic prosperity in the city, the Marginal da Corimba project was launched. The development, worth an estimated $1.6 billion, will see the construction of the Marginal da Corimba highway, fishing port, marina and real estate developments. Through the project the Angolan government hopes to improve the areas of Samba, Corimba and Futungo de Belas, whereby improvements not only benefit local populations – but open up the city for more sustainable urbanisation.
The work will require around 400 hectares of land to be reclaimed from the sea, resulting in a 10 km stretch along the waterfront that will host the new developments. As part of the work, a consortium, containing Urbinveste-Promoção e Projectos Imobiliários, a local firm, and Van Oord, a Dutch dredging company, has been appointed by Angola’s government for the design and construction of the project.
It was recently announced that the consortium has hired Royal HaskoningDHV to deliver a detailed design for the reclamation and shore protection of the wider Marginal da Corimba project. The design phase is expected to be completed by the start of 2018, with the construction phase scheduled for completion by mid-2019.
Remarking on the project, Gertjan Schaap, Senior Project Director at Royal HaskoningDHV, said, “The main aim of this project is to improve life in Luanda, a city that faces huge infrastructure challenges caused by its rapid population increase. The new highway will reduce traffic congestion and the new fishery port will provide an improved and safe base for local fishermen – a vital trade in Angola.”
