Romania has launched headfirst into the offshore wind world with a plan to find 3GW worth of capacity in the Black Sea.
The country’s Ministry of Energy has launched a call for operators who wish to develop sustainable projects to find suitable locations for its burgeoning wind industry.
Those interested will need to look for areas with the most energy potential while also considering the local ecology, grid connection options and compatibility with navigation and fishing channels.
Around €16.7m (£14m) will be allocated to this venture from a renewable energy acceleration pot of £310m which will also go to advancing the nation’s solar energy and hydropower.
Sebastian Burduja, Romanian minister of energy, said: “This call for support for investments in renewable energy production capacities is an essential measure for reducing energy costs and increasing economic competitiveness.
“We are talking about a real opportunity for Romanian enterprises, regardless of their size, to produce their own electricity, reduce costs and actively contribute to achieving climate objectives.
“Through this measure, we ensure that the £310m Modernisation Fund is directed where the impact is maximum – in sustainable investments which generate long-term added value.
“I invite all eligible economic operators to analyse the applicant guide, prepare their projects and access these funds.
“It is a chance to become part of the new energy Romania, an independent, sustainable and accessible one.”
Operators have until June 10 to apply.
