City leaders in Rockaway Beach are hoping to get some help from the federal government to clean up the town and boost its economy.
Rockaway Beach Mayor Don Smith called a meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers and Empire Electric (the company that owns the lake) to talk about what can be done to move forward after December’s historic floods, and ultimately revitalize the tourism town.
Wednesday night’s meeting was packed with people who live in and/or love Rockaway Beach, including Rick Pickren. He owns an antique shop in town, and the building that houses the post office right next door. He says it took more than a month of hard work to clean up after December’s historic flood that brought about 18 inches of water into his shop. Pickren is one of the many people who support the idea of dredging the lake.
