Rock Island’s Sunset Marina will be receiving some improvements following a city council vote.
On Monday, May 13, the Rock Island City Council voted to approve funding for repairs to the marina, which sustained severe damage in 2019’s flooding. The improvements include fully replacing the 400 docks, electrical upgrades to the 100, 300 and 500 docks and dredging all of the deteriorated docks. Dredging is expected to begin in July 2024, with the remaining improvements projected to be completed by July 2025.
“Sunset Marina in Rock Island, Illinois is the largest natural marina in the upper Mississippi,” Rock Island Mayor Mike Thoms said in a press release. “The City of Rock Island along with the Corp Of Engineers are investing in this beautiful amenity in the city, along with helping the economy and job creation within the City.”
The improvements will cost $3.6 million in total. Approximately $1.4 million is coming from a FEMA grant, another $1.4 million is from a city inter-fund loan and the remaining $800,000 will be provided by American Rescue Plan Act funds.
