Rochester Getting Another $2.3M to Dredge Harbor

Posted on December 21, 2015

The city of Rochester is getting an additional $2.3 million in federal funding to continue dredging its harbor next year.

Sen. Charles Schumer announced Wednesday that the funding will be included in the budget expected to be approved by Congress this week.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requested the funding so more silt can be removed from the area of the Port of Rochester where the Genesee River meets Lake Ontario. The agency says failure to do so would reduce the number of bulk carriers that pass through the harbor.

The harbor was last dredged in 2014 to reduce silt that had built up in the channel from Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Schumer says the dredging will also support the new public marina that’s scheduled to open at the port in 2016.
