A total of RM650,000 has been allocated for projects to rehabilitate rivers in the Sibuti parliamentary constituency as part of flood mitigation work.
Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, who handed over the allocation to 130 village security and development committees (JKKKs) yesterday, said all projects must be completed before the end of this year.
“I hope the JKKKs will be responsible and ensure that they work together by doing the ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) because the allocation has been given,” he said.
“The money is from the federal government, channelled through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) here for us because the flood issue was brought to the ministry by me and other YBs (elected representatives) as we are serious in tackling issues that concern the people.”
DID Miri district engineer Hidayati Ismail said the department would monitor the projects.
“This is a ‘gotong-royong’ project for the JKKKs and I hope they would complete the task by November of this year and we would supervise the projects as well,” she said.
The projects include dredging work to remove silt, deepen rivers, and remove debris, solid waste, or other obstacles; grass cutting and riverbank cleaning; river bank stabilisation; upgrading or maintenance of immovable assets such as river and coastal erosion control structures, flood control structures, waterways, pump houses, flood reservoirs, and systems or equipment that support the function of the immovable asset structures.
