In a bid to boost the water connectivity between Tripura and Bangladesh, plans are underway to locate the construction site of a Jetty for an inland waterway project on River Gomati that flows through Tripura and Bangladesh.
The intent behind this move is to connect Tripura’s Gomati with River Meghna in Bangladesh.
To discuss the matter closely, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb called on India’s Shipping and Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari at Delhi on Wednesday.
This was confirmed by a press release issued by the Government of Tripura.
During the meeting, it was decided that a team of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) would be visiting Tripura on December 26-27 to decide the location of the Jetty.
IWAI is a branch of India’s Shipping Ministry.
The proposal to connect Gomati with Meghna first came up in 2014 by the Government of Tripura and a detailed project report in this regard was sent to the Union Shipping and Water Resources Ministry for approval. IWAI approved the proposal in Aug 2015.
Sources said the proposal to establish Gomati with Meghna was included by India’s Ministry of Shipping and Water Resources in its Action Plan for North East Vision – 2020.
