Rio de Janeiro port begins dredging works at Gamboa Pier

Posted on August 6, 2025

On July 29, Minister Silvio Costa Filho participated in the inauguration ceremony of the new Operational Control Center (CCO) of PortosRio and the signing of the service order to commence dredging works at the Gamboa Pier in the Port of Rio de Janeiro. The interventions are part of a broader set of infrastructure and operational improvements planned for the terminal.

The new Operational Control Center is the first step in implementing the VTMIS (Vessel Traffic Management Information System) at the Port of Rio. This advanced technology will enable real-time monitoring of maritime traffic. Equipped with integrated sensors, radars, cameras, and tracking tools, the center provides a precise and comprehensive view of vessel operations, in alignment with Brazilian Navy standards (NORMAM 26) for vessel traffic services. This technological upgrade will enhance the port’s safety, efficiency, and responsiveness to the demands of maritime trade.

During the event, the minister highlighted the Port of Rio’s role as an economic engine both regionally and nationally.

“In the past two years, the Port of Rio has grown by more than 15%, making it one of the most dynamic in the country. In addition to handling over 70% of Petrobras’s offshore operations, the port is a strategic pillar for iron ore exports—one of the key drivers of Brazil’s and the Southeast Region’s economic development.”

At the same ceremony, the service order was signed to authorize the start of dredging works at the Gamboa Pier. The project will be carried out by DTA Engenharia Ltda., with an estimated completion time of six months.

According to the minister, “with this project, the Port of Rio will be ready to meet the demands of the country’s new economic growth cycle, attracting more investment, generating jobs, and boosting our participation in global maritime trade.”

The project encompasses the redesign and expansion of the access channel, including dredging, development of both basic and detailed engineering plans, and the installation of navigation aids, signaling, and other complementary services. Key benefits of this first phase include enhanced navigational safety and efficiency, reduced logistical and operational costs, the consolidation of the Port of Rio de Janeiro as a strategic hub in the South Atlantic, the creation of direct and indirect jobs, and increased tariff revenue and regional GDP impact.
