Reuse of dredged material on beaches and marshes can allow natural processes to resolve coastal problems and improve the environment.

And regional approaches to managing sediments can lower costs, according to the Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean.

The two groups will host a free webinar May 30 from 11 a.m. to noon to discuss how federal and state agencies can work together to best use the Mid-Atlantic’s limited sand resources. It will focus on agencies’ roles, best practices, opportunities and impediments to beneficial reuse of sand and sediment in the region.

The session will be moderated by UCI Associate Director Thomas Herrington. Presenters include Monica Chasten, operations management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Bill Dixon, manager, Bureau of Coastal Engineering, New Jersey Department of Environmen-tal Protection; Bill Hanson, vice president of government relations and U.S. business development, Great Lakes Dock and Dredge.

The webinar is free and open to the public. RSVP requested to Karl Vilacoba at kvilacob@monmouth.edu. To join the day of the webinar, go to: monmouth.adobeconnect.com/sand_management/.
