Repairs to Union Dike levee resume Monday after being halted by rain

Repairs to the Union Dike resumed Monday after a one-day suspension due to rain.

The broken levee had previously offered a measure of flood protection to Valley, Nebraska, and surrounding areas.

Lt. Col. James T. Startzell, deputy commander of the Omaha district of the corps, said repairs to the levee is expected to be completed by Friday, unless there is another weather delay.

Rain is possible Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Valley and surrounding areas have regained some protection from flooding due to the work completed thus far, said Rich Tesar, a member of the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District.

Tesar said the gravel that has been brought in to fill the hole behind the levee will hold back water from the Platte River while permanent repairs are made.

There are more than 350 miles of levees on the Missouri, Platte, and Elkhorn Rivers and tributaries that have experienced significant flood damage, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
