Renourishment works for Apollo Bay foreshore

Posted on July 6, 2020

Sand renourishment works are about to be carried out on the Apollo Bay foreshore.

Sand will be sourced from south of the intended renourishment zone at ‘Mothers beach’ using deposits from recent dredging of the Apollo Bay harbour to create a temporary dune system to stabilise the foreshore.

Plans will be finalised to construct new permanent coastal protection infrastructure later in the year, which could include groynes, rock revetments or other appropriate options.

Work is expected to commence in mid-July and spotters will be on site to ensure the safety of locals and fauna, including hooded plovers.

Research from Deakin University has shown that while renourished sand is often washed away, previous beach renourishment in the area has been an effective buffer against storm and tidal surges and has helped slow erosion and shoreline retreat.

DELWP Barwon South West Regional Manager Greg Leece is asking everyone to be careful on the beach as work is carried out.

“Residents and visitors are urged to take care and observe warning signs during the works as there will be trucks moving up and down the beach,” he said.
