Beach renourishment in North Myrtle Beach is set to begin.

The $72 million project paid for by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will replenish sand on 26 miles of beach in the Grand Strand, with work beginning on the North Strand.

Dredging equipment will be installed beginning Thursday, Dec. 11 and continuing through Monday, Dec. 15.

Work will be visible on the north end starting on Monday, Dec. 15. It is to be done in 1,000-yard segments and will be performed around the clock. Safety barriers and signage will clearly mark closed areas. Pipelines running alongside the beach outside the fenced area can be crossed where the contractor places crossover sand ramps over the pipes.

Sand is dredged from offshore borrow areas onto a hopper dredge. The hopper dredge brings sand from the borrow area closer to the project site and hooks up to a submerged pipeline, which runs laterally along the dry beach.

This barrel to be used in the beach renourishment project was pre-positioned offshore recently in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach.

Sections of pipe to be used in the beach renourishment project are stored in the lot formerly occupied by the Pelican Motel in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach.

Equipment for an upcoming beach renourishment project is pictured in a staging area across the street from Boulineau’s store in North Myrtle Beach.

Then the sand is discharged as a water/sand slurry mixture through the pipeline and is shaped along the beach by bulldozers.

Staging for the project began on Nov. 15 and a large amount of equipment, including tractors and pipes, was placed in the lot where the former Pelican Motel in the Cherry Grove section was located. The adjacent public parking at the end of Sea Mountain Highway was closed Dec. 1 and will remain so during the project.

If sea turtles are present in any work area, work will cease.

Work on the North Myrtle Beach section of the project is expected to be completed in February, 2026. The timeline is subject to weather delays.
