A dredging project in Grand Traverse Bay Harbor in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has received final approvals from government regulatory agencies.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says dredging is expected to start in May and is part of efforts to save Buffalo Reef off Gay, northwest of Marquette.
The state says stamp sands created in the early 1900s as a byproduct of copper processing at two mills in Keweenaw County are threatening to cover the natural fish-spawning reef and natural beaches. The coarse black sands have drifted south after being dumped into Lake Superior.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has provided about $3 million to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to design and carry out the dredging.
