Reflection One Year Later After Francis Scott Key Bridge Tragedy

Posted on March 28, 2025

BALTIMORE, MD— “One year later, we reflect on the lives lost, the importance of community, and the power that we possess to create a safer, brighter, and even more resilient future for our people,” said Ports America Chesapeake (PAC) President, Mark Schmidt. “The collapse of the Key Bridge revealed critical needs for investments to be made in infrastructure that can withstand modern challenges.”

Even as vessel traffic was suspended and economic uncertainty loomed, PAC worked to maintain employment of approximately 300 longshore workers daily by facilitating key terminal improvements, equipment upgrades, regular maintenance, and cross-training programs to ensure readiness and stability when the channel reopened, and operations resumed. While the channel was reopened last June, neighbors, small businesses, employees, and supply chains are still disadvantaged due to route disruptions. Recognizing the far-reaching impacts of the tragedy and the lives that have been forever changed as a result, PAC continues to look for ways to support the local community and invest in operations at the Port of Baltimore.

“Our mission is to ensure Baltimore comes out of this time stronger than ever,” Schmidt added. “This is more than just business continuity — it’s about showing up for people, investing in their future, and preserving the legacy of a port that has powered this region for generations.” In January 2025, the ILA and PAC teams at Seagirt Marine Terminal achieved a record-breaking 6,956 container moves—the highest exchange of containers ever handled at the Port of Baltimore—a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when we come together with one goal and uncompromising determination.

Among other contributions to support the local community, PAC is a proud sponsor of Echoes from the Key Bridge, a program under development at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. The project honors port workers, first responders, and community members whose lives were impacted by the collapse — ensuring their stories are preserved and shared for generations to come.
