Bisnis Bali reports that the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, presided at a “sand-breaking” ceremony at Bali’s southernmost port of Benoa on Monday, September 18, 2017, marking the commencement of a port improvement project targeting to transform Bali into a modern passenger cruise ship destination.
The ceremony, held at the eastern pier of Benoa’s International Passenger Terminal, according to the Minister, paves the way for the eventual reception of large cruise ships and hundreds of sailing yachts.’
Minister Pandjaitan supervised the dredging of the port already underway that will be followed by re-landscaping and pier improvements. When completed, the port will have a depth of 12-meters and be able to berth ships measuring 200 meters in length.
The enlargement of the port basin will mean more than 100 yachts will be able to visit a port that will, in time, have supporting shopping and accommodation facilities.
Luhut targets completion of dredging and port basin by the end of 2018. He said the port would eventually be able to berth ships carrying 5,000 passengers.
The Minister expressed the hope that the completion of the first phase of the redevelopment of the port can be completed before an important World Bank and International Monetary Fund set for October 2018.
