The project runs between Forte Novo and Garrão beaches
The golden beaches stretching from Quarteira to Garrão are set for a major makeover, with nearly €13 million earmarked for a vast sand replenishment project. The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) confirmed that the public tender has been opened, aiming to protect 6.6 kilometres of coastline from the growing threat of erosion.
The project, which runs between Forte Novo and Garrão beaches, will see sand pumped onto the shoreline to strengthen natural defenses against the sea. According to APA, the goal is to “saturate sediment capacity with wave action,” reducing the wear on fragile sandy cliffs.
Funding comes largely from Europe: around €10 million will be provided through the EU’s Cohesion Fund, with a further €3 million covered nationally via Portugal’s Environmental Fund.
Work is expected to take 238 days once it begins, meaning beachgoers may see some heavy machinery in action next year.
