Ministers of Aquaculture and Fisheries and the Environment, Katuska Drouet and Tarcisio Granizo, agreed with representatives of shrimp traders to review and deepen the environmental impact study (EIA) to the dredging project of Puerto Bolívar, El Oro, in order to avoid possible impacts on the shrimp production chain.
The decision was adopted in response to the concerns of the sector caused by the start-up consequences of the work.
The measure responds to the commitment of the State portfolios to protect the well-being of this productive sector and to the concern expressed by associations, such as the National Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA) and representatives of the shrimp traders of the province of El Oro, regarding technical aspects of the environmental impact study presented by the concessionaire for the development of the dredging of the pier, the maneuvering area and the access canal to Puerto Bolívar.
“An agreement has been reached among all of them so that the environmental impact study has modifications for the dredging to be well done,” assured the undersecretary of Aquaculture, Daniel Carofilis.
El Oro is the second largest province producing shrimp in the country, so, the changes to the EIA should include the possible consequences of dredging in the production areas of the crustacean.
The resolution was adopted at a meeting held in Guayaquil attended by CNA president José Antonio Camposano and the Chamber of Shrimp Producers of El Oro executive president Segundo Calderón, among other representatives of that province.
