The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are working on a plan to reduce flooding risks along Rocky Creek.
The Army Corps is seeking public input on a Tentatively Selected Plan to renovate the Rosedale Dam, purchase and remove some flood-prone housing, and build a recreational park.
The proposed improvements are located in Rocky Creek southeast of Bobby Jones Expressway and Gordon Highway.
According to the plan, the plan calls for the purchase of five homes in the area. The homes would be flooded with 2½ to 5½ feet of water during a 100-year flood.
The plan calls for three homes to be demolished and the owners relocated after Augusta-Richmond County purchases all five properties. Two of the existing homes in the plan are currently vacant. The plan also calls for the construction of a recreational park to replace the five homes.
According to a Army Corps spokesperson, by converting the properties to greenspace, the flood plain “would be restored to a more natural function and humans would be at less risk.”
