Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has approved the establishment of the Kuala Task Force to dredge shallow rivers and process muddy water into clean water, as part of disaster mitigation and water security efforts.
“This is a big engineering operation, and I fully agree. We need to normalize the estuaries,” he said during a limited meeting in Aceh Tamiang on Thursday (1/1/2026)., instructing the Ministry of Defense and the Indonesian Military (TNI) to coordinate with regional administrations and engineering experts.
Proposed by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, the task force will focus on river estuaries affected by sedimentation, starting in Aceh Tamiang, with operations expected to begin within two weeks. The program will deploy dredging vessels equipped with water treatment systems to supply clean water directly from estuaries, according to antaranews.com
The initiative aims to accelerate disaster response, improve water access, and strengthen infrastructure resilience, with funding flexibility guaranteed by the President.
