Preparatory work for sand replenishment between Quarteira (Forte Novo) and Garrão has already begun, the president of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) announced this Sunday, March 15th.
In this initial phase, “the pipelines and equipment necessary for dredging and sediment transport operations are being installed, which will allow the deposition of approximately 1,3 million cubic meters of sand on the beaches most vulnerable to erosion», according to Pimenta Machado.
According to this official, this intervention is part of “the sustainable coastal zone management strategy, contributing to mitigating the effects of erosion and climate change.”
All this sand will be extracted from a borrow pit five kilometers off the Algarve coast, in offshore accountsThe intervention will cost 14,3 million euros.
Moreover, just recently, Telmo Pinto, the mayor of Loulé, He had expressed his concern about the delay in these works.
In a meeting with journalists, the mayor confessed to fearing that the sand replenishment would only be ready in May, jeopardizing the start of the bathing season.
