Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu made an important statement regarding the dredging operations to be carried out in the Marmara Sea following its declaration as a special environmental protection (SEPA) area. The Minister emphasized that a sensitive follow-up process is being carried out regarding the spillage of dredged material, especially in areas with intensive activity such as shipyards and ports in Marmara.
Cooperation between the Ministries of Environment and Transport
Uraloğlu stated that a working process was carried out in harmony with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. According to the arrangement, it was stated that the dredged material that will emerge after the deepening works to be carried out by the facilities in Marmara will continue to be dumped in the designated areas until 2030. This step was taken to minimize both environmental impacts and to ensure the sustainability of maritime transportation in the region.
Continuous Auditing and Environmental Awareness
In line with its environmental protection goals, the Ministry aims to protect the marine ecosystem through continuous inspections and regulations, taking into account the environmental sensitivities in the Marmara Sea. In this way, it is aimed to continue economic activities in the region without harming the environment.
