MANILA – The Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) is advancing sustainable coastal development through international engagement while intensifying enforcement against illegal reclamation projects nationwide.
In a news release on Monday, the PRA said it recently engaged industry leaders in the United Arab Emirates to exchange best practices on environmentally responsible coastal and marine development and explore potential investment partnerships for the Philippines.
The engagements were held upon the invitation of NMDC Business Group, one of the world’s largest engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and marine services companies.
Led by PRA Chairperson Alex Lopez, the Philippine delegation discussed approaches to balancing environmental stewardship with economic growth in support of the country’s infrastructure and coastal development priorities.
“This engagement builds on the trade agreement signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on 12 January 2026, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to international cooperation, sustainable development, and quality foreign investments,” the PRA said.
The authority said it is stepping up enforcement actions against unauthorized reclamation activities across the country, reiterating that all reclamation projects require prior PRA approval.
“Projects found without permits may face show-cause and cease-and-desist orders, forfeiture of reclaimed land, and possible administrative, civil, or criminal penalties,” PRA said in its Facebook post.
Legitimate reclamation projects undergo a strict review process to ensure environmental protection and public safety, the PRA said.
The agency said its overseas engagements in Dubai and intensified domestic enforcement efforts reflect its commitment to “protecting the environment, upholding the rule of law, and promoting sustainable development through responsible reclamation.” (PNA)
