Portos do Paraná has begun its 2025 maintenance dredging campaign with two vessels operating in the access channel to the Ports of Paranaguá and Antonina. The goal is to maintain the current navigation parameters, which provide safety and efficiency to the port structure of Paraná. The service is necessary to contain the silting process, which can compromise the passage of ships in navigation areas.
The first vessel to begin work was the Galileo Galilei dredge, at the end of April. The equipment is in the access channel to Porto Ponta do Félix and will then work in the turning basin of the site. The objective is to ensure a depth of 9,5 meters for navigation.
In early May, Vox Alexia began work at the entrance to the access channel to the Port of Paranaguá, located near Galheta Island. The expected depth in this area is 16,5 meters. The vessel will then move on to work in areas Bravo 1 and Bravo 2 (between Ilha do Mel and the Port of Paranaguá), with depths of 15,5 meters and 14,5 meters, respectively.
“It is important to highlight that the equipment in operation is newly built and designed with modern technology, which ensures high efficiency in dredging activities”, explains Lucas Gonçalves, coordinator of Bathymetry and Dredging at Portos do Paraná.
“It is a routine campaign that we carry out every year and is very important to maintain navigation standards. They ensure safety and allow ships to enter and leave with the expected cargo, keeping the port operating without unforeseen events,” he concludes.
The Galileo Galilei dredger, which operates under the Luxembourg flag, belongs to the Belgian company Jan de Nul. It is 166,55 meters long and was built in 2020. The Vox Alexia belongs to the Dutch company Van Oord, is registered in the Netherlands, is 137,5 meters long and was built in 2021. Both vessels operate under contract with the Itiberê Dragagem Consortium.
The campaign is expected to be completed by July.
