Porto do Açu and Belgian company Sarens sign MOU on logistics solutions for offshore wind

Posted on December 2, 2024

(Eixos) The Porto do Açu, in Rio de Janeiro — controlled by Prumo Logística in partnership with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International — signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Belgian company Sarens, to study partnerships in logistics solutions for the transportation of components for the offshore wind power chain

The agreement was formalized during Princess Astrid’s visit to the Belgian economic mission and is Sarens’ first for offshore wind projects in Brazil.

“We want to combine integrated logistics and become an operation and maintenance hub with more competitive costs for the offshore wind industry in Brazil,” says Mauro Andrade, Executive Director of Business Development at Prumo.

Prumo estimates that approximately 35% of the cost of a wind project depends on logistics factors.

The studies will evaluate solutions for transporting turbines, blades and other components manufactured in the sector’s value chain, since the logistics of this equipment require specific operations.

The Belgian group specializes in lifting and transporting heavy equipment, such as offshore wind turbine blades, which can exceed 100 meters in length.

Offshore wind hub
Açu’s plan is to be a support hub for the offshore wind industry in Brazil, as well as a manufacturing and assembly hub for the value chain, attracting manufacturers of turbines, blades and cables.

With almost 39 GW in projects with licensing requests on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, according to Ibama, the port-industrial complex has a strategic location, in addition to being connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN) and being able to take advantage of synergies with existing logistics for the oil and gas sector.

These projects foresee billions of dollars in investments, but their viability depends on the approval of a legal framework, which is still under discussion in Congress.
