State environmental regulators will hold a public meeting on a Port of Portland proposal to place dredged Willamette River sediment onto West Hayden Island.
The session takes place Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m., at the Red Lion Hotel on the island, at 909 N. Hayden Island Drive.
An estimated 9,000 to 14,000 cubic yards of material will be taken from the Willamette at the Port’s Terminal 5. The dredging is considered necessary to maintain safe navigation in the river.
The sediment is proposed for an area about three-fourths of a mile from a residential area, on a site historically used for dredged sediment.
The state Department of Environmental Quality is proposing to approve what’s called a beneficial use determination, as requested by the Port of Portland. DEQ reviewed laboratory analytical data on the sediment to ensure that contaminants in the material are below levels of concern for people and animals, based on current and potential uses of the site.
