Port of Virginia Expands Capacity With 12 New Container Stacks at NIT

The first phase of a $375 million expansion project for the Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) concluded this month, expanding capacity by 12 new container stacks.

The Port of Virginia wove this into part of a $375 million expansion project scheduled to be completed in 2020. In all, 30 semi-automated container stacks served by 60 new rail-mounted gantry cranes will operate on site. This project expands the site’s annual capacity by 400,000 container units, specifically on its south container stack-yard, raising container units to 1.25 million.

“A little more than a year ago an area the size of 30 football fields was cleared and today we’re processing thousands of containers through that same space,” John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, said. “We are forty-percent of the way through construction and are seeing good flow at the gates and are maintaining a strong, customer-focused effort during construction.”

Work on Phase II is ongoing and will consist of another six stacks. Work on Phase III will not begin until May but will add another 12 stacks.
