According to the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) Statistical Bulletin for October, traffic in Valencian ports has grown for the second month in a row this year.
Last month, the Valencian docks managed 6.8 million tonnes of goods, which represents an increase of 6.99 per cent over the same month of 2022.
This data is broken down into a growth of 1.48 per cent in the tonnes dedicated to exports and 3.40 per cent increase in imports.
The port authority attributed the rise in traffic at Valenciaport to an increase in the management of general goods, totalling 6 million tonnes (+ 7.84 per cent), as well as bulk cargo, which has accumulated a total of 793,337 tonnes (+ 1.01 per cent) in October 2023.
When Valencia compared the accumulated numbers for the year (January to October 2023 vs. the same period in 2022), the port began to notice a certain stability with a balance of -5.66 per cent tonnes handled and -8.67 per cent TEU.
During the same time period, both the total number of passengers and the total number of RoRo freight increased by 14.71 per cent and 8.63 per cent, respectively.
The expansion of rail transport is one of the foundations of the PAV’s environmental plan since it decreases emissions related with logistics and contributes to the Valenciaport 2030 goal of zero emissions.
Traffic to and from the Far East increased once again, with the number of TEU handled in the previous year reaching 647,279 (+2.97 per cent), said the port authority.
China remained Valenciaport’s major trade partner in 2023, with 459,636 containers managed, closely followed by the US with 303,853; nonetheless, Egypt (+26.52 per cent), Vietnam (+26.23 per cent), and India (+17.53 per cent) have gained the most in their traffic with Valencia.
Focusing on traffic by country in terms of tonnage, Italy continues to be Valenciaport’s main trading partner with 5.52 million tonnes handled this year, followed by China with 5.24 million and the US with 4.7 million.
