The Port of Los Angeles Monday opened the application period for its annual Community Investment Grant Program, which provides nonprofit organizations with grants to support events, programs and projects that benefit the harbor community.

The port will provide a total of up to $1 million to nonprofits, which can apply for small grants of less than $5,000, medium grants up to $99,999, or large grants of more than $100,000. Funds come from Port of Los Angeles revenues, not taxpayer dollars.

To qualify, organizations must have activities or programs that promote or support local workforce development, education, the environment or the Los Angeles waterfront.

Previous recipients include the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor, the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, the Think Earth Environmental Education Foundation, International Bird Rescue and the Marine Mammal Care Center.

Interested applicants can attend a virtual informational workshop on April 1 at 6 p.m. on Zoom at zoom.us/j/95529627322.

Applications, which are due by 4 p.m. May 10, will be reviewed by a committee comprised of port, city and community representatives. The Board of Harbor Commissioners will announce the recommended grantees in July.
