Port of Kalama commissioners Wednesday awarded a $1.1 million contract to Vancouver-based HME Construction for maintenance dredging at TEMCO grain terminal, and they also approved a salary hike for port employees.
The dredging project will remove approximately 108,000 cubic yards of sand from the Temco berthing area. Dredging will start in the first two weeks of September and be complete by the end of October.
The work is paid for by revenue the port raises through tariffs and fees companies pay to use the berth. If the dredging costs ever exceed $2.1 million every three years, TEMCO must pay the difference.
Also Wednesday, port commissioners approved a request from Executive Director Mark Wilson to increase the port’s budget for salaries by 5.6 percent based on merit and cost-of-living increases. In the coming weeks individual employees will have their salaries adjusted upwards.
The commission also agreed to increase Wilson’s salary by 5 percentin July, to $153,749. The top salaries of the other port executives won’t be available until August.
Unlike other local agencies, Port of Kalama typically adjusts its workers’ salaries mid-year instead of during the fall budgeting season.
