Port of Houston Posts Record Volume

Posted on August 21, 2024

The port of Houston has surpassed 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for 2024, establishing a new record for the volume of cargo passing through the port. The number of TEUs processed through the port’s terminal is 13% greater than in the first half of 2023.

In June alone, the port managed 7% more TEUs compared with June 2023. Much of the demand for goods and consumer spending comes from furniture, hardware, retail goods and food. Texas’ continued record-breaking growth has led to increases in import and export volumes compared with previous years. The Houston port is the fifth-largest container port in America, making it a pivotal port of commerce along the Houston Ship Channel. This is particularly true for nearby industrial park occupancy rates and construction planning.

The port continues to make progress on the Houston Ship Channel Expansion project, which will welcome 15,000 TEU-class vessels by the end of the year.
