GALVESTON, Texas — More cruise terminals, hotels, boardwalks: The Port of Galveston area could look much different in 20 years from now, according to the Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees’ updated 20-year master plan.
The board approved the plan in February and has scheduled an informational meeting for the public on March 25.
The master plan was first adopted in 2019. Since then, many of the projects it laid out were completed faster than expected, including two new cruise terminals and expanded cargo facilities, Galveston Wharves Port Director and CEO Rodger Rees said.
“We ended up building the fourth cruise terminal about six years ahead of time,” he said. “That’s when we, the board, decided, ‘Hey, since we’re ahead of schedule, let’s go ahead and update this master plan.’”
The port went back to the same consulting firm, Miami-based Bermello Ajamil & Partners, which reworked the plan over several months last year.
